Three PU students win gold medals at National Weightlifting C’ship

Three students of the Punjab University have earned great honor for the university by winning gold medals while representing the Higher Education Commission (HEC) at the National Weightlifting Championship 2026 held at the Coaching Center of the Pakistan Sports Board in Lahore, Dr Shabbir Sarwar, director for sports, announced.

Representing the Higher Education Commission, Qasim Tasneem, 71-kg, and Abdullah Lone, 79-kg, of the Punjab University secured gold medals in their respective men’s weight categories, while Sehar Wain, a student from the university’s Gujranwala Campus, won unbeatable gold medal in 58-kg women’s category. With these achievements, the commission won first trophy in Men and Women weightlifting championships.

Dr Shabbir Sarwar said that these achievements reflect the high standard of the selection committee of the Sports Directorate and the state-of-the-art training camps at the Punjab University besides the university’s continued commitment to producing outstanding athletes at the national level. In a statement, Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali congratulated the medal winners on their outstanding achievements and appreciated their dedication and hard work.

He extended his felicitations to HEC  Chairman Dr Niaz Ahmad and Director General for Sports Rizwan Shaukat and expressed confidence that these athletes would continue to bring further glory to the Punjab University and the commission in the national and international competitions. Dr Shabbir Sarwar praised the athletes, coaches, and the staff for their exceptional performance.

He acknowledged efforts of Deputy Director Muhammad Attique Khan for his guidance, coordination and commitment in preparing and managing the university’s male weightlifting contingent. He also congratulated HEC men team manager Mushtaq Ahmad and HEC women team Manager Ali Raza for their best coordination and commitment. In May, the Punjab University tops All Pakistan University Sports Ranking with 18 points after the ranking based on HEC General Trophy Awards issued.
