The Young Doctors Association (YDA) has condemned the assault on a doctor at a private teaching hospital in Lahore, calling for a transparent investigation into the incident. The provincial branch of the medical organization also shared a video that showed the incident.
According to YDA Punjab President Dr Shoaib Khan Niazi, the incident occurred at the Hayat Memorial Hospital of the Continental Medical College on Defense Road in Lahore. He also shared a video that he said showed the incident. The video showed that around 20 individuals entered the hospital’s Emergency Department at approximately 10:30pm and assaulted a doctor who was on duty.
The doctor suffered injuries, including a reported patellar dislocation, and was shifted for urgent medical treatment. The medical organization stated that the incident has also raised questions over security arrangements at the hospital. They reported that no security personnel were deployed outside the emergency department or conducting effective patrols at the time of the incident.
Despite the hospital and medical college operating from a shared campus with a single main entrance, the group of people entered the premises without resistance. It said that the only security guard who reached the scene did not intervene. Condemning the violent incident, Dr Shoaib Niazi called for holding accountable those responsible for brutal act. He warned that the association would announce its future course of action if justice was not served.
“We demand that the incident be investigated immediately through a transparent and impartial inquiry, that those responsible be brought to justice in accordance with the law, that effective security measures be ensured for the protection of medical staff in hospitals, and that practical steps be taken to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future,” he said in a statement.
“Our Young Doctors Association makes it clear that if justice is not served and effective action is not taken against those responsible, it will announce its future course of action and utilize all lawful and peaceful democratic means to safeguard the security, dignity, and rights of the medical community,” he added. The association is a prominent medical organization representing house officers, postgraduate trainees, and young medical professionals who advocate for workplace security, fair service structures, and healthcare reforms.
