In Pakistan, skywatchers can enjoy full moon on October 7, as year’s first supermoon will look 14% larger, and 30% brighter
The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has good news for skygazers that a supermoon will grace the night skies on Tuesday – 7 October 2025 – when the Moon reaches its closest point to the Earth. The first supermoon of the year will be visible across Pakistan just like other countries of the world, according to the national space agency.
When the Moon reaches its perigee — the point in its orbit nearest to the Earth — it appears significantly larger and brighter than usual, earning it the name of a supermoon. The space agency officials said that the supermoon would appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than an average full moon. On that night, the Moon will be approximately 224,599 miles (361,400 kilometers) from the Earth.
This will be the first supermoon in 11 months, the last one appeared in November 2024. Following this event, additional supermoons are expected on November 5 and December 5 of this year while fourth supermoon will appear in January 2026, though it will not be counted as part of the supermoon cycle of 2025. On average, three to four supermoons occur each year.

Interestingly, experts noted that when a supermoon rises near the horizon, it can appear even larger to the naked eye due to an optical illusion — a phenomenon that has fascinated for centuries. On the other hand, October 4 is the International Observe the Moon Night that will bring together moon enthusiasts worldwide for more than 950 online and in-person events. These moongazing sessions aim to spark curiosity about space science while encouraging everyone to appreciate the beauty of the moon.
In person events will take place across the Americas, Europe and Asia, hosted by organizations ranging from national parks and observatories, to elementary schools, local astronomy clubs and libraries. Countless online events are also scheduled, including online lectures, lunar tours and outreach programs geared towards encouraging lunar photography and learning. As per officials, skywatchers and moon enthusiasts are preparing to celebrate the seventeenth annual moon night – an event held each year in September or October when the moon is favorable for viewing.
This year’s celebration offer a chance to experience closest celestial neighbor through community skywatching, science talks, and cultural activities. Started by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 2010, following the launch of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). Their only goal is to make lunar science accessible, blending public outreach with opportunities for education and cultural appreciation. The Moon on October 4 will be in its waxing gibbous phase — occurring after the first quarter and before the full Moon — where more than half of the Moon is illuminated by the Sun.
NASA plans to celebrate International Observe the Moon Night 2025 with a special focus on Artemis II, a 10-day-long, manned lunar mission launching in early 2026. Another option is to tune into online livestreams hosted by NASA and its partners, such as the Observe the Moon Night 2025 show. They include telescope feeds, expert talks, and interactive Q&A sessions with astronomers where they discuss initiatives space enthusiasts can involve themselves in, cultural storytelling, and some lesser-known facts about features of the Moon.
